  • Pilgrimage Service Day

    Saturday, December 10, 2016

8:15 am to 2:00 pm The Bird Room

In this season of Advent, this is an opportunity for us to gather as a community and live out our values of connection, justice, and action - this is one way we prepare and wait for the birth of Christ. This also gives us a taste of the ways that our Pilgrimage groups connect their faith, values, and actions. We will all hear someone's story experiencing homelessness, serve our hungry neighbors, and reflect on how our experiences transform us. As we serve our neighbors, we will split into three groups to: Assemble and hand out bagged lunches in our neighborhood, Cook a meal for Open Table, and deliver meals and groceries to chronically ill people for Food and Friends, an agency that our Pilgrimage groups support. All ages and abilities are welcome! This is also a great way to introduce a friend to Pilgrims. Coffee and bagels will be ready by 8:15 am, we will begin at 8:30 am, and we will end with reflection over lunch (provided), wrapping up by 2:00 pm. Please contact Rachel Pacheco with any questions and to let her know you plan to participate: thepilgrimage@churchofthepilgrims.org.

  • Adult Formation: How to Disrupt Oppressive Comments, Jokes, Actions, and Other Offensive Moments.

    Sunday, December 11, 2016

9:30 am to 10:30 am The Bird Room

You hear your co-worker make a racist comment. You witness sexist behavior in staff meetings. You are on the metro and someone starts in with Islamophobia. What do you do? Power can be and is paralyzing. We can feel powerless in the moment to do or say anything. That's the point of power--to make us feel powerless, that change isn't possible. Join Ashley for the second week of this 2-week series on how to disrupt these types of moments. We will use improv games and imagine situations and responses together as a way of empowering us to act in safe, faithful ways to oppressive words and comments. This class is for you if you think everyone else knows what to do in these moments but you. Very few of us know how to react in these oppressive moments. Our work as followers of the Way is to train ourselves to know how to act and react.

  • Third Sunday in Advent

    Sunday, December 11, 2016

11:00 am to 12:00 pm The Sanctuary

This Sunday is the Third Sunday of Advent, as we work our way through the four-week period leading up to Christmas day. Our theme this year is "Nervously Awaiting Advent's Disruption." Advent is a season of waiting, longing, anticipation, as we hope against hope for God's light to pierce the darkness. This Sunday Nancy Neal will be preaching on Mary's song of justice (otherwise known as The Magnificat) is Luke 1:47-55. Each week during Advent we will receive a special offering. This week our offering is dedicated to the Camp of the Sacred Stones. The Camp of the Sacred Stones was established on April 1 2016 at the edge of the Missouri and Cannonball Rivers on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation to resist the Dakota Access oil pipeline. Our Advent offering on December 11th will be a financial offering to support the Legal Defense Fund of the Sacred Stone Spirit Camp. Sacred Stones is the spiritual and cultural camp on the Standing Rock reservation resisting the Dakota access oil pipeline through non-violent direction action.
