Pilgrims on the Journey:
1. It's been great to be back this week after a week away in Northern Michigan, where the evenings were cool and the humidity low. How do people stand that kind of weather? Thanks especially to Minas Roros and Justin George for sharing during worship on Pride Sunday. I have heard nothing but positive things. It takes a great deal of courage to tell your personal story-- and a supportive community to welcome it.
2. Friday evening, June 30th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bird Room, is our special potluck dinner with New York Avenue Presbyterian Church for Anayda Diaz Herrera, from the First Reformed Presbyterian Church of Havana, Cuba (see attached flier). If you would like to come and have not done so already, please contact Betty Rudolph at vstbeehive@verizon.net or (202) 625-2940.
3. There will be a special gathering next Sunday, July 9, following coffee hour, for anyone interested in joining a Gulf Coast Mission Trip in the Fall. Even if you are only remotely interested, please plan to attend. We need to set a date! We are looking at the first week of October. If you cannot attend, but are interested, please send a note to Anne Womeldorf adwomeldorf@speakeasy.net.
That's all the news this week: We have officially shifted into summer mode!

Pilgrims on the Journey:
1. I can't speak for everyone, but Sunday was a banner day for me.
- Passing out Play-Dough during morning worship (a first!) for Christian Education Sunday, as we reflected on what "shape" God has in store for our lives. (Congratulations to all our teachers, for another great year!)
- Knocking on doors in Columbia Heights with Emily Presley (our new summer intern, from Davidson College; make sure you welcome her this Sunday, or send her a note emilypresley@gmail.com <mailto:emilypresley@gmail.com> ) as a part of WIN's "Get Out the Vote" effort. We had 8 Pilgrims involved in the effort. Emily and I knocked on about 70 doors and spoke to ten people. That's a lot of people to reach in about two hours. (We may do a Dupont Circle walk later this summer.)
- Staffing the booth at the Pride Festival, handing out stickers and buttons and brochures about the church. (Thanks to Jonathan Mertz and Jeff Francisco who helped set up the booth, and the ten or so Pilgrims who volunteered during the day.)
- All during a gloriously beautiful cool summer day.
2. This Sunday we continue to celebrate GLBT pride in worship, as two of our own members, Justin George and Minas Roros, will share their own personal stories during worship. We will also take up a special offering to support More Light Presbyterians (www.mlp.org <http://www.mlp.org> )
3. Mark your calendars for Friday evening, June 30th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bird Room, when Church of the Pilgrims, together with New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, will host a potluck dinner with Anayda Diaz Herrera, who is President of Presbyterian Women of the Havana Presbytery and is an Elder of the First Reformed Presbyterian Church of Havana, Cuba. We are jointly hosting her trip here June 28-July 5 prior to the Triennial Presbyterian Women's Gathering through a National Capital Presbytery Peacemaking grant. Please contact Betty Rudolph at vstbeehive@verizon.net <mailto:vstbeehive@verizon.net> or (202) 625-2940 for further information and to RSVP.
4. I will be away until June 24, on a sort of "busman's holiday," preaching and lecturing at The Bay View Association (www.bayviewassoc.com <http://www.bayviewassoc.com> ), a 130-year-old summer community of Victorian cottages in northern Michigan affiliated with the United Methodist Church, 30 minutes south of where Cheryl's dad lives. My parents will also join us, along with a host of other Michigan friends and family. I've never done something quite like this before, so I'm looking forward to it. I preach on Sunday, and then have daily lectures each morning (afternoons free). We're hoping for warm weather!
5. Our condolences to Music Director Rob Passow's partner, Patrick Cox, on the death of his step-mother, Alice Kate Tait Niffenegger Cox. She was 85 years old. Patrick writes, "Mom’s passing came after a rapid three week decline in her physical body. Throughout her transition Mom showed a strong sense of what was occurring and repeatedly affirmed her belief that for everything and every person there is a season." You can write Patrick at their home address: 805 N. Howard St., #123, Alexandria VA 22304-5467.
6. Update on the Capital Campaign: We are nearing $350,000 in pledges, edging closer to our basic campaign goal of $400,000. (Average pledge so far: almost $9,000!) If you have not yet made a pledge, please do so: Every pledge counts and is needed!
See you in about two weeks!
In peace,

Pilgrims on the Journey:
1. What a great start to our Capital Campaign Sunday: $255,000 already pledged toward our $500,000 goal. Twelve "Visiting Stewards" were commissioned on Sunday to visit with church members and friends and ask for your commitment to the campaign. Most of you have already been contacted, and several have already been visited. The goal is to complete all visits-- or as many as humanly possible-- before next Sunday, June 11, so we can announce the results of the campaign during morning worship (and so the Campaign Committee can have their normal lives back!). Thank you, thank you to all who have already made a pledge to the campaign, and to the Campaign Committee and Visiting Stewards for all their hard work! (Note: We may not be able to visit every single family and friend, especially those who are newest to our community of faith. However, every pledge matters, at whatever level. If you received a letter but have not received a visit just yet-- won't you bring your pledge to church this Sunday? With your help, we can make it over the top!)
