Pilgrims on the Journey:

1.  It is nice to be greeted by somewhat cooler weather upon my return, following our scorching July. Thanks to Ashley and our guest preacher, Dan Christian, for leading worship while I was away. As it turns out, that will be Ashley's last Sunday with us for a while.

Bob and Ashley welcomed Ryan Sullivan into the world on August 15 at 1:30 p.m., 8 lbs. 14 oz.( !! ), 21"  (and he was two weeks early!). Mother and son are doing well. Kelsey and I went by to see them this morning, and arrived in time to watch Maddie and Sam meet their new baby brother for the first time. I forgot to bring my camera into the hospital, but I snapped this shot of the five Goff-Glenons with my camera phone (not the best quality, but you can see the joy!).

Bob & Ashley's home address is 2400-A South Walter Reed Drive, Arlington, VA  22206 is you want to send a note. Look to see Ashley back in church around the first Sunday of Advent!

2. Hospital Report # 2:  Nancy Lee Head is doing much better. She can now speak, is beginning to eat regularly, and is being weaned off the ventilator. She is in remarkably good spirits, and grateful for conversation. She had a successful skin graph on her leg last week, and still faces more surgeries, but she seems to be out of the woods, and may be moved to a rehab unit soon. She can now receive more visitors, though she still needs lots of rest. You can continue write her at Inova Fairfax Hospital, 3300 Gallows Road, Falls Church  VA  22042-3300.

[Those of you who have never met Nancy Lee can meet her "virtually" by watching the church history video, now posted on our website: http://www.churchofthepilgrims.org/aboutus.html  (scroll down the page for the video). ]
2.  Tomorrow night, August 17, at 6:30 p.m. Gerry Hendershot is convening the Membership Development Team to discuss several ideas for reaching out to our community in new ways and welcoming newcomers into our congregation. If you would like to join the team (no long-term commitment necessary), bring your ideas and appetite-- the meeting is beginning with dinner.  And send a note to Gerry  Hendershot so he know to expect you ghendershot@earthlink.net .

3.  This Sunday, August 20, from 12-4, and again next Saturday, August 26, from 1-5, Pilgrims will take part in a Ward 1 Voter Education Walk with the Washington Interfaith Network to educate voters about WIN's "Neighborhoods First" agenda. We will carpool over after church to All Souls Church on 16th Street. We will also walk our own neighborhood on Saturday, September 9, sharing with our immediate neighbors about both WIN and Pilgrims. If you would like to participate in any of these walks, let me, Gerry Hendershot, or Kathy Keler know.

5. Next Wednesday night, August 23, I will lead another "One-Shot" Theology on Tap 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Brickskeller across the street from the church. Planned with young adults in mind, all ages are invited. We will meet in the downstairs back room, sharing a meal from 6:30-7:30 and Bible Study from 7:30 to 8:30. As always, this is Bible study even for those who have never done Bible study before.

6. The following Saturday, August 26, Barb Sherrill is hosting the Virginia-DC "Supper Club" with special guest expatriate Tish Lowe who will be in town for a few days on hiatus from her art studies in Florence. The gathering will be a pot-luck picnic, hot dogs and hamburgers provided. Send Barb a note if you would like to attend:   bmsherrill@comcast.net

7. My open invitation to get together for breakfast, coffee, lunch, drinks, dinner, whatever, still holds. If you've got some time in the next couple of weeks, let me know. I would love to catch up with you about your life, and hear your thoughts about our life together at Pilgrims.

8. Mark your calendars: September 10 is Homecoming Weekend, when our Fall schedule resumes, and we welcome everyone back from summer vacations. A great Sunday to bring a fri

Pilgrims on the Journey:

1. What a moving experience it was on Sunday to stand with our summer intern, Emily Presley, as she reaffirmed her baptismal vows. This was the first time for us to "gather around the font" since our renovations last summer-- and we all fit very nicely. How nice to have the space "work with us." Emily's last day is this Friday, when she heads home for a few weeks before returning for her final year at Davidson College. The purpose of her internship was to experience life in parish ministry first-hand, and to help her discern whether she has a "call to ministry." If you would like to weigh-in with Emily, send her a note:  emilypresley@gmail.com  (As for me, I'm voting for seminary!)

2.  Ten of us participated Monday night at WIN's "Accountability Action" with the City Council Chair and At-Large candidates. I was particularly moved by Houston Roberson's "Call to Action" (attached). Mr. Roberson is a lay person at St. Teresa of Avila Roman Catholic Church in SE. He was very nervous speaking before all the assembled leaders, but did a great job-- and spoke from his heart and personal experience.

3.  If you are free tomorrow night (Thursday), join us for worship planning at 7 p.m. We'll gather in my office. We will be focusing especially on Homecoming Sunday (September 10). The text for that Sunday is the 2nd chapter of James.

4.  This Sunday, August 6, Ashley will preach and lead worship, including Celebration of the Lord's Supper. We will have our monthly "buffet" lunch following worship.

5. I have two Nats tickets for Friday, August 11, when we will be away at the beach. If you would like them (sitting with Jerry McPike and a few other Pilgrims) let me know, and I will pop them in the mail to you.

6. Gulf Coast Trip Update: The dates have been confirmed for our mission trip to Diamondhead, LA: Leaving Saturday, October 14, and returning Saturday, October 21. Approximate cost of the trip: $600-$800 per person, depending on airfare. I will be booking flights with a travel agent on August 15. If you would like to go, send me a note by August 14. (If you decide later to come, you can-- but you will have to make your own travel arrangements.)  Send Anne Womeldorf a note if you have any questions  (adwomeldorf@speakeasy.net) . All skill levels are invited, but it will likely be some version of hard, manual labor.

7. Update on Nancy Lee Head. Nancy Lee is beginning to make real progress in her healing, but still has a long way to go. She has been moved out of ICU, and is awake and alert-- but still unable to speak due to a tracheotomy. Visitors are still restricted, and it would be best to check with me or Ashley before going to see her.

Stay cool!

Peace,

Jeff Krehbiel, Pastor
Church of the Pilgrims
Washington, DC
