June Issues Among Us - 6/26

It’s an Issues Among Us Outing to Friendship Place! Come take an inside look at another Friendship Place facility and learn about the programs at their Welcome Center. On Wednesday, June 26th at 5:30pm you are invited for an inside peek at Friendship Place’s flagship program. This will be a little more DIY than our usual Issues Among Us outings, as it’s not our event, but we think it is such a great opportunity to get out and learn about the programs and offerings of FP and to see how our support of their programs makes a difference.

You need to RSVP for this event.

Please RSVP by email to crutledge@friendshipplace.org.

May Issues Among Us - 5/18

May Issues Among Us: Undesign the Redline Saturday May 18th 1pm

Meet at the Cleveland Park Library on Saturday, May 18th at 1pm to tour this new exhibit about the practice of redlining in DC. Undesign the Redline is an interactive exhibit that explores the history of race-based exclusion from DC neighborhoods. The exhibit explores the history of redlining — the explicit devaluation of residential areas based on race — in upper Northwest DC and helps us understand why inequities in housing and wealth persist. How can we “undesign” these wrongs?

We'll meet in the lobby of the library at 1pm, take some time to explore the exhibit, then find a place to sit together to eat and discuss what we learn. Make sure to bring a lunch with you. Please RSVP to Erin via email if you plan on attending.

“Undesign The Redline DC” opens to the public at the Cleveland Park Library on Saturday, April 13 and runs through July 11. Learn more at the exhibit's website.

Free, public events held in connection with the Undesign the Redline exhibit will explore the racial history of upper Northwest DC and create opportunities for community-building and further discussion about how we can take action to repair the breach. View the full list of these programs here.

March Issues Among Us - 3/17

Join us after worship on Sunday 3/17 for a trip to the National Gallery of Art to see their exhibit, Dorothea Lang: Seeing People. One of the most iconic American photographers of the 20th Century, Dorothea Lang addresses issues of poverty, racism, migration and more in her intimate and personal photos of folks living their every day lives. Come and join the conversation she starts among us...

Issues Among Us - Jan 14

Let's make it a whole day of church fun! After worship, after the congregational meeting, we will go as a group over to the MLK Library for a screening and panel discussion with the filmmakers of "The Rebellious Life of Rosa Parks."

Here's how the library explains the movie and the event: The Rebellious Life of Rosa Parks, based on the bestselling biography by Jeanne Theoharis and executive produced by award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien, corrects the record on Rosa Parks’ often-overlooked accomplishments and the erasure of her radical politics. In short, what we are taught in school about Rosa Parks is a mere fraction of the full story about who she truly was.

Doors open at 1 p.m. and the screening will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Directors Yoruba Richen and Johanna Hamilton expertly weave together interviews from academics and activists such as Bryan Stevenson, Patrisse Cullors and Ericka Huggins, along with personal stories from her family, and remarkable footage of Mrs. Parks herself, to dispel myths and to illuminate her decades-worth of extensive organizing, strategizing, and activism in the pursuit of Black liberation. Lisa Gay Hamilton lends her talent in the documentary as the voice of Mrs. Rosa Parks.

October Issues Among Us - 10/21

Let’s meet at the National Museum of Natural History on Saturday, October 21st at 11am to see the exhibit, Lights Out: Recovering Our Night Sky. We’ll learn about light pollution and what we can do to help bring back the darkness!

We’ll meet outside on the Mall-side of the museum and go in together. Be sure to pack a bag lunch so we can sit and have a discussion afterwards.

You can learn more about the exhibit here.

Issues Among Us- 9/30

We're kicking off year two of our learning and discussing the Issues Among Us with a group outing to the Anacostia Community Museum on Saturday, September 30th. Meet at the museum at 11:00am (or let Erin know if you need a ride, it's kinda far from the metro station). We're going to see their exhibit called, "To Live and Breathe: Women and Environmental Justice in Washington, DC."

Oh, and don't forget to bring a bag lunch with you so we can find a lovely place outside to eat and discuss after touring the exhibit.
