Prayer Stations: The Cross and Resurrection

Featuring artwork by Mary Button

A long tradition in our faith, walking the Stations of the Cross during Holy Week has become a beloved experience of the Passion story for many. Walking the stations is a bit of a pilgrimage through art, a spiritual journey through the story. This year, we invite you to walk a new and updated interpretation of the classic stations, as crafted by artist and pastor Mary Button.

Mary pairs moments of the Passion story with moments from Jesus’ resurrection story. In a series of before and after pairings, she also mixes in “moments of chaos and crisis during this past year of pandemic life.” With color and story she creates images of community and conflict, pain and healing, death and resurrection. She explains, "The intent behind the format of this series is to encourage people to pray the stations as pairs, the first station of the cross with the first station of the resurrection, and so on. Chaos and catharsis. Grief and joy. Cross and resurrection.”

We are making these scenes, this story, this experience available to you in two ways: the artwork is posted on the gates outside at Church of the Pilgrims and we’re putting them up online, too. We invite you to view the artwork and pray the provided prayer for each image. We hope you’ll notice how the two stories, the Passion and the Resurrection interact with one another, and also with the stories of our modern lives.

We hope you’ll hold in your heart, God’s very real experience of violence and pain with God’s very real story of life and hope. We pray this journey will be a unique and holy experience for you during this holy week.

There are 16 total images, in 8 pairs. The top scene is from the Passion story and the bottom scene is from the Resurrection story. Each image has a brief prayer that accompanies the artwork.
